The Tamani Kenya Story
God gave James and Truphena Wanjala a vision over 10 years ago to rescue and serve orphans in the Kwa Njenga slums, south of Nairobi's city center. The mission began as an outreach of New Hope Church. Originally, only six little ones were safeguarded by Tamani Kenya. At that time, the orphanage consisted of a small 50’ X 50’ compound with a dirt floor. All of the children came from the dangerous slums of Mukuru kwa Njenga, one of the largest in the country. Soon, there would be more children. Many were brought by families that could not care for them, some were found wandering the streets, others abandoned as infants in the dumps of the slum.
In August of 2008, Tom and Diane Gouge were part of a mission team from New London Presbyterian Church, now known as the Christian Life Center. Tom and Diane saw God working through the lives of James and Truphena and felt called to become part of his wonderful plan. When the trip came to a close, the Gouges formed the Tamani World Children Project: a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
By the grace of God and the generosity of our donors and partners, Tamani World Children Project supports the work of James and Truphena. This includes funding for the children's basic living necessities and covering operating expenses such as new equipment and caregiver salaries. In Kenya, primary and secondary education is not funded by the government. We put a high priority on keeping our children in school as we desire them to have the opportunity to develop into strong leaders and attend college or University. Many of our students hold the honor of being first in their class!
